The Schlage Z-Wave Connect Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt saved me many hours of sleep and worry.
Type: Key Pad
Securtiy: Anti-pick shield
Rating: 4 Stars
After my daughters turned 21 the party was on! Weekends were a non-stop time for going out and coming home at all hours of the early morning. Many nights I would get a call anywhere from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. I would pick up the phone and hear, “can you come downstairs and unlock the door for us”?
I would ask them what happened to their keys? The response was always “we don’t have any place to carry them”. They would take these little wristlets out with them. The number one thing that went in there was the cell phone. No room for anyhting else.
One of their ideas was to leave the house key in the mailbox. Um, No!
Since I wanted to upgrade my locks due to the neighborhood getting bad, why not solve both problems. That is exactly what I did.
Why this dead bolt?
First, this lock is a grade 1. A grade 1 means it’s the best. It is stronger than all the other grades. it will be harder for someone to break in when you have this lock installed. It comes with an Anti-Pick shield. This shield prevents tampering with the lock.
This is compatable with your home automation
If you have a smart home, this keypad lock is for you. It can be controlled by your smart phone or computer. You will need a Z wave compatable automation system.
There were not any smart home “apps” when my girls stayed out all night. How convenient would that have been back then? They could of just let themselves in with an app on their phone. But, that was not available then. It is now for you!
The Z Wave wieghs in at 4 pounds. Now that is a pretty hefty lock. Wtih that much weight to it, you can be sure it is well made and will have a lot of resistance to someone trying to break it.
How is this lock powered
The Schlage deadbolt is powered by 4 AA batteries. I used Alkaline batteries in mine. They lasted about 3 to 4 months. We used the lock rather regularly, especially on the weekends in the early morning hours. I got to sleep while my girls could get back in the house without disturbing me.
Installation, hard or easy
Installing this lock was pretty simple. It’s made to fit a standard lock install. All I had to do was take out what was already in my door and replace it with this lock. It couldn’t have been any easier as all the holes lined up. That almost never happens.
There are no wires needed for this. Another bonus!
Automatically locks by itself
How many times have you left the house and shut the door behind you? 3 minutes later you start to wonder if you actually locked the door. I didn’t have to worry about that with this lock. When you leave the house and shut the door behind you, 30 seconds later the door will lock. No more worrying about that!
It’s a little noisey
When the lock engages and disengages, you hear it. This sound never bothered me. I kind of liked that it made the noise it did. I could tell when someone was coming in. Mainly my daughters. You dad’s know there is no good sleep until your children are back safely in the home.
If you have the Schlage Z-Wave Connect Camelot Touchscreen Deadbolt connected to your phone or computer, you can actually open the lock for the device. How cool is that. If you need to let someone in like Grandpa or Grandma, no problem.
If you find out one of your kids gave the code to a friend who gave it to another friend and so on, changing the code can be done through the smartphone. Pretty neat feature right there.
The one thing I was concerned about? This uses a standard key. A standard key can is susceptible to bumping. I haven’t heard of this happening to this particular lock. It is just a concern I had. Being that bumping is not a popular form of breaking in, I wasn’t too worried about it.
All in all, I was happy with the Schlage z wave lock at my old house. I will get another one for my new house once we are settled there.
